Fly-fishing, or flea flicking
as I like to refer to it, gets a ton of good press. In my humble
opinion, too much. I moved out west about 7 years ago, and brought
with me my deeply ingrained love for trout fishing. I found a
great little river that's perfect for my methods of fishing,
and have been fishing that river quite heavily for most of the
time I've lived here. Yet invariably, every time I mention fishing
or how much I love fishing, someone says to me, "So where
do you fly-fish?" Why is this? I have to correct them by
saying, "No-no. I don't fly fish". Then they look at
me like I'm some sort of alien, from another planet!
Just as I was born with a deeply
ingrained love for trout and trout fishing, I was born with the
same deeply ingrained hatred for fly-fishing. My fishing mentor
called the practice "flea flicking", which is good,
but I prefer to refer to it as waving feathers in the air. The
"zipping" sound of that colorful line being pulled
off of a reel, the fact that flea flickers don't use their reel
½ the time, most of all the holier than thou attitude
that most of these freaks posses is enough to drive me crazy.
I had an old friend tell me
the other day that she was going to learn how to fish. I said,
"That's cool." Then she proceeded to tell me that her
boyfriend was going to teach her how to fly fish. I remarked
about how that was too bad, and then thought to myself, "Yea
right, this dink just wants to get in her pants." I'm sure
if I talk to her again in a year, the act of fly-fishing will
be long forgotten, other than to say something like, "Yea
I've done that."
My point to this article is
to say simply that fly-fishing is not for everyone. No matter
how "hip" or "cool" it's made out to be,
not everyone likes it. Fly-fishing is more of a production, than
the "art form" it professes itself to be. The art form
is in the ability to catch, land, and subsequently release fish
using gear that gives the fish as much of a chance to escape,
as to be caught. The art form is in the act of fishing in the
right way, not by fishing with a certain method.
If there's anyone reading this
who assumes that if you fish, you must fly fish, hopefully you
understand now that fly fishing is not for everyone. And if you're
one of those pompous, holier than thou, fleas flickers, just
go to your "special regulation" areas of the river
and be quiet! Your methods of fishing are no better or worse
than my methods of fishing, they're just different. Remeber what
Steven Wrighty said of all of us, "There's a fine line between
fishing and just standing on the bank looking like an idiot".
